In Croix-des-Bouquets, where the local trade is centered around metal sculpture, women are definitely on the periphery, but there are a few who are not content to stay there. They are challenging the notion that it is "men's work" and going into business, either for themselves, or in partnership with male relatives. Guerlande Balan, whose four older brothers are all sculptors, is making a name for herself, creating such pieces as this exuberant sun face. You go, Girl!

This is a hand-crafted original piece of Haitian metal art, made from recycled steel drums and brought to you through fair trade practices. It is created in traditional fashion; the artist utilizing simple hand tools for both the cutwork and detailing. A protective, weather-proof coating has been applied, making it suitable for display indoors or out.
Worried that this sculpture may rust? Don't be. A weathered patina isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if that's not the look you're going for, take five minutes to apply a spray-on clear coat enamel once a year to keep your outdoor sculpture looking the same as the day you bought it.
Hanging your art is easy once you know how. Choose a point where the design element is joined or notched and use a nail to hang it on the wall. Use a second and a third nail (if necessary) within other design elements to straighten and secure the piece. A word of caution: Don't place a nail in an eye or mouth. A viewer's eye will go straight there and straight to the nail. You want the nails to "disappear" into the sculpture. (And they will!)
